Get Your Pool Heater Ready for Fall: A Sarasota Homeowner's Checklist

Cooler evenings are coming to Sarasota and Manatee County. Here is a simple checklist to make sure your pool heater fires up the first time you need it this season.

October in Sarasota, Bradenton, and Lakewood Ranch still feels like summer during the day, but once the sun drops the evening air cools off fast. That is the moment homeowners who heat their pool realize the heater has been sitting idle since spring. A little prep now saves you a cold spa and a frantic service call the night guests arrive.

Why Fall Is the Right Time to Check Your Heater

Pool heaters fail most often on the first real cold evening of the season, when they have to fire up after months off. Scale buildup in the heat exchanger, a failed pressure switch, or a corroded igniter are all problems that quietly developed over the summer. A quick inspection now catches them before they leave you with cold water and a house full of company.

Your Fall Pool Heater Checklist

  • •Clear leaves and debris from around the heater cabinet so air can flow freely
  • •Check that the pilot or igniter fires on the first try
  • •Look for soot or discoloration around the burners, a sign of incomplete combustion
  • •Inspect the heat exchanger for white calcium scale buildup
  • •Confirm the pressure switch and water flow sensor respond when the pump runs
  • •Test the temperature setpoint and make sure the unit holds it
  • •Verify your gas supply valve opens fully and is not seized

Gas Heaters vs. Heat Pumps in Cooler Air

If you run a gas heater like a Pentair MasterTemp or Raypak, it will heat fast regardless of the air temperature. The main fall concern is combustion: dirty burners, a worn igniter, or a failing gas valve. If you run an electric heat pump, keep in mind it pulls warmth from the air, so it works harder as nights cool down. A Built Right or AquaCal unit in good shape handles Florida evenings easily, but a unit low on refrigerant or with a tired fan motor will struggle.

Thinking About an Upgrade This Season?

If your heater is older, unreliable, or costing more to run each month, fall is a smart time to consider replacement before the busy winter season. Newer inverter heat pumps like the AquaCal TropiCal run far more efficiently and offer Wi-Fi control from your phone. We size the right unit for your pool, your electrical setup, and the space on your equipment pad, so it fits the first time.
